Community Food Projects Competitive Grants Program

SUMMARY: This grant is designed to meet the nutritional needs of low-income individuals, and to support local communities and farmers so they can meet the needs of their own communities.

ELIGIBILITY: Private nonprofit entities with experience in community food work concerning small and medium sized farms. Please see details in full announcement.

AWARD: $25,000-$300,000 with a total amount of funding of $5,000,000

Value-Added Producer Grant Program

SUMMARY: The primary objective of this grant program is to help eligible independent producers of agricultural commodities, agricultural producer groups, farmer and rancher cooperatives, and majority-controlled producer-based business ventures develop strategies to create marketing opportunities and to help develop business plans for viable marketing opportunities.

ELIGIBILITY: Applicants must be an independent producer, agriculture producer group, farmer or rancher cooperative, or majority-controlled producer-based business venture.

AWARD: 130 awards for up to $300,000

Environment Funding Opportunites - Ongoing Funding

Center for Watershed Protection: Technical Capacity Mini-Grant Program

SUMMARY: The Center for Watershed Protection is currently inviting proposals for its Technical Capacity Mini-Grant program, awarding direct assistance and financial support to a wide range of small watershed organizations. These small watershed organizations play a key role in local watershed management and, collectively, in regional water resource protection and restoration. The goal of the mini-grant program is to strengthen the technical capacity of these watershed organizations in the areas of stormwater and watershed management.

ELIGIBILITY: Any small not-for-profit 501(c)3 watershed group within the United States, and local government and conservation districts can also apply, provided they partner with a watershed group.

AWARD: Up to ten $5,000-15,000 grants

DEADLINE: Applications accepted on a rolling basis until the grant money has been awarded.

 

Best Buy Electronics Recycling Grant Program

SUMMARY: The Best Buy Recycling Grant Program provides support to help increase the consumer electronics recycling opportunities available in communities across the United States. Priority is given to electronics recycling events, but other types of occasions that include electronics recycling are considered.

ELIGIBILITY: All organizations and groups are welcome to apply, including nonprofit organizations, cities, counties, and public-private partnerships.

AWARD: Grants range from $500 to $1,500

SUMMARY: The Build-A-Bear Workshop Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization committed to improving communities and impacting lives through unique philanthropic programs that help children and families, animals and the environment.

Environmental Support Center

SUMMARY: Applications for training and technical assistance forms to strengthen nonprofit environmental organizations in areas including fundraising, organizational development, and planning.

ELIGIBILITY: Regional, statewide or local nonprofit organizations serving low-income or minority constituencies that have environmental issues as a significant part of the organization's agenda.

Ohio Department of Natural Resources; Division of Recycling and Litter Prevention Community Development Grant

SUMMARY: Project funding is for the implementation of recycling, and litter collection projects.

ELIGIBILITY: County governments, solid waste districts and municipal corporations (population over 50,000).

AWARD: Grants range from $10,000 to $150,000.

New Approaches to Resource Use Supported Blue Moon Fund

SUMMARY: The blue moon fund seeks to improve the human condition by changing the relationship between human consumption and the natural world. The Rethinking Consumption and Energy initiative is aimed at developing environmentally-friendly, efficient, and economically competitive transportation and energy choices worldwide. The goal of the Balancing Human and Natural Ecosystems is to reduce unsustainable resource pressures and to preserve biodiversity and ecosystem function. The Reenergizing Urban Communities is based on the belief that underpinning vibrant and resilient cities is their capacity to self-organize in ways that maximize the economic, cultural, environmental, and spiritual benefits of urban life.

ELIGIBILITY: Support is provided to nonprofit organizations in Asia, Latin America, Europe, and the United States that have developed innovative, holistic approaches to improving human quality of life in harmony with the natural world.

DEADLINE: Online letters of inquiry for these three initiatives are accepted throughout the year.



The Turner Foundation

SUMMARY: The Turner Foundation is committed to preventing damage to the natural systems – water, air and land – on which all life depends. The foundation makes grants in the areas of environment and population and focuses on four main components: safeguarding habitat, growing the environmental movement, creating solutions for sustainable living and health planet/health communities.

DEADLINE: No set deadline, the Foundation will annually select priority areas within the above program areas.





National Forest Foundation: Community Assistance Program

SUMMARY: The National Forest Foundation is a private, nonprofit organization established by Congress to support the USDA Forest Service in its management of the nation's forests and grasslands. The Foundation's Community Assistance Program promotes the creation of locally-based collaborative forest partnerships that seek to build environmental and community sustainability.

ELIGIBILITY: Groups or nonprofits

AWARD: $5,000-$15,000

Singing for Change (SFC) Charitable Foundation

SUMMARY: Areas of interest: Children and Families; The Environment; Disenfranchised groups.

ELIGIBILITY: Nonprofits under IRS tax code 501c(3) or other organizations that have a sponsoring agency with this status.

AWARD: Range from $500-$10,000

DEADLINE: Proposals are by invitation only. If you think your project fits the foundation’s guidelines submit a one-page letter of interest describing your organization and project.



Supplemental Appropriations Disaster Relief Opportunity

SUMMARY: This grant is designed to bolster regions that are suffering economic distress after experiencing severe flooding, severe mid-west tornados, or other forms of natural disaster.

7th Annual P3 Awards: A National Student Design Competition for Sustainability Focusing on People, Prosperity and the Planet

SUMMARY: The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as part of the P3 Award Program, is seeking applications proposing to research, develop, and design solutions to real world challenges involving the overall sustainability of human society. The P3 competition highlights the use of scientific principles in creating innovative projects focused on sustainability. The P3 Awards program was developed to foster progress toward sustainability by achieving the mutual goals of economic prosperity, protection of the planet, and improved quality of life for its people-- people, prosperity, and the planet – the three pillars of sustainability. The EPA offers the P3 competition in order to respond to the technical needs of the world while moving towards the goal of sustainability.

ELIGIBILITY: Public nonprofit institutions/organizations (limited to degree-granting public institutions of higher education) and private nonprofit institutions/organizations (limited to degree-granting private institutions of higher education) located in the U.S. are eligible to apply.

AWARD: 40 awards for a total of $850,000

Disaster Resilience for Rural Communities


SUMMARY: Communities and their residents in the United States experience droughts, earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, tsunamis and volcanic eruptions as well as accidents at facilities that handle dangerous materials such as explosive chemicals. These phenomena will continue, but their consequences need not be disastrous if communities and people reduce their vulnerabilities and increase their resilience. There is much research on vulnerability and resilience in urban communities, but much less about how rural communities and their residents are responding to natural and man-made hazards. The long term goal of this program is to advance basic research in engineering and in the social, behavioral, and economic sciences on enhancing disaster resilience in rural communities.
