12.21.06 - Strickland Appoints Insurance, ODJFS Directors
Columbus, Ohio – Ohio Governor-elect Ted Strickland and Transition Chair Mayor Michael Coleman announced today the appointments of Helen Jones-Kelley as the director of the Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services and Mary Jo Hudson as director of the Ohio Department of Insurance.

“Mary Jo and Helen bring a wealth of practical experience and an inspiring commitment to public service to their new roles,” Strickland said. “They will be steadfast advocates for all Ohioans, and join us in our efforts to turnaround Ohio.”

Both Hudson and Jones-Kelley are leaving positions in local government to take on these director positions.

“We continue to move forward with leaders with tested experience, and I’m proud to see candidates like Helen and Mary Jo step up to the challenges ahead,” Coleman said. “These two bring local and statewide skills balanced with common sense, and they’re going to be great assets in the Governor-elect’s cabinet.”

This year, Jones-Kelley was named the director of the Montgomery County Department of Jobs and Family Services after the Montgomery County departments of Jobs and Family Services and Children Services merged. Jones-Kelley served as the executive director of the Montgomery County Children Services Department since 1995. She is also a licensed attorney.

Prior to her work with Children Services, Jones-Kelley served as a referee (Magistrate) and Assistant Legal Director for Montgomery County Juvenile Court, where she started the Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) Program. In 2003, she was appointed co-chair of the statewide Advisory Council on Children, Youth and Families.

Jones-Kelley received her Bachelor’s degree in Secondary English Education from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. She earned her law degree from the University of Dayton School of Law.

“I am grateful for this opportunity to continue to be an advocate for children, families and workers in every county in Ohio,” Jones-Kelley said.

Hudson is currently a member of the Columbus City Council and chairs the Jobs and Economic Development Committee. She is also an attorney at Bailey Cavalieri LLC.

From 1989 to 1996, Hudson worked for the Ohio Department of Insurance and Office of the Ohio Insurance Liquidator as Deputy Liquidator and Liquidation Counsel and a Special Services Attorney. Hudson received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Public Administration from Miami University and her law degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Law.

“I am honored by Governor-elect Strickland’s appointment, and I am excited to return to the Department of Insurance to help turnaround Ohio during this critical time in our state’s history,” Hudson said.

These appointments are subject to the advice and consent of the Ohio Senate.

12.8.06 - Strickland Appoints Budget & Management Director, Tax Commissioner
Columbus, Ohio – Ohio Governor-elect Ted Strickland and Transition Chair Mayor Michael Coleman announced today the appointments of Pari Sabety as director of the Office of Budget and Management and Richard A. Levin as Tax Commissioner.

“In Pari and Rich, we’ve found two exceedingly bright and capable leaders to ensure that our state government is managed in an efficient manner that promotes economic growth and limits unnecessary taxation and regulation," Strickland said. "I have asked them to begin putting together a budget that emphasizes the priorities of our Turnaround Ohio plan--growing a highly skilled workforce and spurring job creation.”

A certified public accountant, Sabety brings more than 20 years of experience in the field of economic development to her role as OBM director. A former economic policy adviser to Governor Richard Celeste and director of the Technology Policy Group at Ohio State University’s Fisher College of Business, Sabety was most recently a fellow at the Brookings Institution and director of the think tank’s Urban Markets Initiative.

“The Strickland-Fisher Turnaround Ohio plan provides a clear blueprint for our work,” Sabety said. “From building on our regional economies to fostering innovation and entrepreneurship to promoting the production of alternative and renewable energy, we will invest in what really matters while living within our means.”

Levin was a Deputy State Tax Commissioner from 1983-1991, before founding Levin, Driscoll & Fleeter, a consulting firm that specializes in assisting state and local governments, school districts and businesses with complex public policy analysis surrounding taxation. Levin has also served as the Bexley City Auditor and as a lecturer at the School of Public Policy and Management at Ohio State University, the Franklin University College of Business and the Capital University School of Law.

“We will honor the hard work that led to Ohio's landmark tax reform last year and will work to ensure that Ohio’s businesses and citizens find a predictable and stable tax code,” Levin said.

Governor-elect Strickland will deliver his first proposed budget to the state legislature by March 15.

The appointments are subject to the advice and consent of the Ohio Senate.

12.4.06- Strickland Statement on Passing of OFT President Tom Mooney
Ohio Governor-elect Ted Strickland made the following statement regarding the passing of Ohio Federation of Teachers President Tom Mooney:

I am deeply saddened to hear of the unexpected passing of Tom Mooney, an outspoken advocate for improving our education system in Ohio and across the country.

No one was more passionate about providing our children with an equal opportunity to learn and compete in a global society. And Tom was not afraid to challenge the status quo. He pushed higher standards while fighting to create a constitutional system of school funding in Ohio that is both adequate and equitable.

He will be greatly missed by all of us who know that Ohio's future depends on a first-class system of education that fosters all of the talents of our children.

Tom was my friend, and I extend my sincere condolences to his family and many friends.
