The Governor’s Office for Women’s Initiatives and Outreach
Salutes Ohio’s Women Cabinet Members
With the recent appointment of women directors to the Ohio Lottery Commission and Ohio departments of Public Safety and Development, Gov. Ted Strickland’s cabinet reached a significant milestone - of 26 cabinet members, 13 are now women. Several of these women are the first females to hold their positions and represent nontraditional career choices for women.
While women have made significant gains in fields such as education, politics, health and the military, much remains to be done in order to continue to advance the status of women in leadership. The United States ranks 67th in the world in terms of women's political representation, and women lead only 13 Fortune 500 companies. According to the Institute for Women’s Policy and Research, Ohio ranks 34
th
in the United States for the percent of women in managerial and professional occupations. We need more women at the top alongside men. Research shows that when women sit at the table, they enhance the decision-making process. In short, increased diversity in leadership can be considered a gain for all Ohioans by ensuring that a broader sphere of perspectives is represented.
Please join us in saluting these women by spreading the word in your community.
