Kasich Executive Order Helps Boost Food Security and Prevent Low Birth Weights

Governor John R. Kasich signed Executive Order 2012-08K to authorize the Governor's Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives to support efforts that provide essential nutrition support to low-income children during the summer while they are away from access to the free or reduced-price meals they would normally receive at their schools.  The governor's executive order also boosts support services to at-risk mothers to help them deliver healthy, normal-weight babies.

Details of the efforts include:

  • Up to $1 million to assist the Ohio Association of Second Harvest Foodbanks, increasing the amounts of food for at-risk children in the summer months;
  • Up to $50,000 for case management services to assist Moms2B!, a Columbus-based organization that works with at-risk pregnant women to help receive the resources they need to deliver healthy, normal-weight babies;
  • Up to $10,000 to assist Grace Missionary Baptist Church in Columbus to open a choice food pantry to assist local needy families.

 An advocate of healthy nutrition and lifestyle choices, avid runner and former health care executive, First Lady Karen Waldbillig Kasich reiterated the importance of preventing hunger and malnutrition in children and helping ensure babies are born healthy and of normal weight.

"In addition to helping pregnant women in need, these resources will provide 600,000 weekend meals for hungry children this summer.  Preventing hunger and malnutrition in children allows kids do what they do best - be kids - and supports them in becoming healthy adults," Mrs. Kasich said.  "Each of these programs aims to prevent Ohio's children from experiencing potentially serious health, learning and societal problems later in life by providing them the healthy start they deserve."
