Major General John Harris served as the Assistant Adjutant General for Army since January 11, 2011. He began his military career in 1981 when he enlisted in the Ohio Army National Guard. He received a commission in 1984 through Officer Candidate School.
General Harris has commanded at the platoon detachment, company, and squadron levels while serving in staff assignments at the battalion, squadron, and joint force headquarters level. Recent assignments include Chief of Staff (Joint Force Headquarters), Deputy Chief of Staff for Personnel (Joint Force Headquarters), and Commander of Task Force Lancer in Kosovo.
THE ADJUTANT GENERAL commands the Ohio Army National Guard and the Ohio Air National Guard with approximately 17,000 members. These units can be mobilized at any time by the Governor of the State of Ohio in his capacity as Commander in Chief upon the declaration of a state of emergency. Over 27,000 Ohio National Guard members have been called to federal service in support of overseas contingency and homeland security operations since September 11th 2001, highlighting the dual role of the Citizen-Soldier and Citizen-Airmen.
